Self Love and the Jewish Calendar
On the Jewish calendar, we just entered Elul, the final month of the year. It is a time pregnant with potential and meaning, as we prepare for the High Holidays and enter the peak of the harvest season. Each day, the blast of the shofar, the ram’s horn, awakens our soul with the battle cry of humanity. We strive for meaning, for proximity to the Divine, for a return to our truest selves.
The Hebrew letters that spell Elul, Alef, Lamed, Vav, Lamed, are also an acronym for a phrase from the Song of Songs, Ani L’dodi V’dodi Li. In the spirit of the season, and in recognition that we must heal ourselves before we can heal the world, this is my liberal re-translation of the phrase.
